Solar Sunday is a solar observing event put on by the astronomy volunteers – Ray and Kate O’Connor – at the natural tunnel state park. They are normally held on the second Sunday of the month at 11:00am – 3:00pm near the chair lift at the top of the mountain. The even itself is free, but you will have to pay the usual parking fee to pass through the gate to get to the chair lift.
They utilize the Park’s 10 inch Meade SCT telescope with a special solar filter in place to make solar viewing safe. This is a drop-in style event where they will have the telescope set up and will be waiting and available for anybody who wants to stop by and look at our star.
So, if you have ever been interested in seeing what out closest star looks like up close and personal, come out and have a look! Once you are done looking at the Sun, take the chair lift down (or hike down the mountain) to get a look at the wonder that is the Natural Tunnel.
SAFETY NOTE: Do not look at the Sun without the use of specialized solar filters. It will damage your eyes, and if viewed through an optical aid, could cause serious burns or even fires.
